The data file that opens nowhere

Apache Parquet is the file format modern data lives in. Data warehouses export it, analytics pipelines write it, and data lakes are made of it, because it keeps big tables small and fast to read. That is great for the systems that produce it and frustrating for the person who receives one, because double-click a .parquet file on a Mac or tap it on an iPhone and nothing happens. There is no built-in Parquet opener, and the usual answer is to install a programming environment and write a script just to look at a table.

Parquet Viewer is the Parquet file viewer for that moment. Open the file and every row and column appears in a clean table, with the row count, the column count, and the file size across the top. Tap a column to sort it, filter any column down to the rows you care about, and page through large files without waiting. It reads .parquet, .parq, and .pq files from the Files app, iCloud Drive, Mail, AirDrop, or any share sheet, so it works as a Parquet reader, an Apache Parquet viewer, and a quick way to open a Parquet file wherever it arrives.

A data file is only as useful as your understanding of its structure, so the schema is one tap away: every column name, its data type, and which columns are allowed to be empty. Next to it sit the statistics of every column, including null counts, distinct values, the minimum and maximum, and the compression and encoding each column uses. It is the fastest way to answer the questions that come before any analysis, such as whether the export is complete, whether a column is full of blanks, and whether the dates cover the range you expected.

Most people open a Parquet file because they need the data somewhere else, and that is where the Parquet converter comes in. Convert Parquet to CSV for any spreadsheet, database, or script, convert Parquet to JSON for web and API work, or convert Parquet to Excel and get a real workbook you can open in Excel straight away. It is the simplest answer to how to open a Parquet file in Excel, because Excel reads the workbook directly, with no import wizard and no add-in.

It works the other way too. Turn a CSV file into Parquet, or convert JSON to Parquet, including JSON Lines and nested JSON with objects and arrays inside each record, and the column types are worked out for you. That makes it a CSV to Parquet converter and a JSON to Parquet converter in the same app as the viewer, so you can check the finished Parquet file the moment it is written.

When a table is too big to read row by row, ask it questions. Write SQL queries against your Parquet data and read the results as a table, search every row of a file for any value, and see histograms, distributions, and category breakdowns for your columns. Parquet Viewer runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with no account and no login, and every file stays on your device, which matters when the data belongs to a client or holds customer records.

How it works

How to open a Parquet file on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

01

Open the Parquet file

Tap a .parquet, .parq, or .pq file in the Files app, iCloud Drive, Mail, AirDrop, or any share sheet — or tap Open File inside Parquet Viewer.

02

Explore the table

Scroll every row and column, sort and filter any column, and page through large files. The row count, column count, and file size sit on top.

03

Check the schema and stats

See every column name and type, which columns can be empty, and each column's null count, distinct values, minimum, and maximum.

04

Convert or query

Convert Parquet to CSV, JSON, or Excel, turn CSV or JSON into Parquet, or run a SQL query — then share the file or save it to Files.

Supported formats

Parquet in, CSV, JSON, and Excel out — and back again.

Search Every Row

Find any value anywhere in the file, across every column and every row.

Charts for Your Columns

Histograms, distributions, and category breakdowns that show the shape of the data at a glance.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac

The same Parquet opener at your desk, in a meeting, or on the way home when someone sends an export.

Stays on Your Device

Files are opened, queried, and converted on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Nothing is uploaded, which matters when the data holds customer or company records.

No Account, No Login

No sign-up and no sign-in. Open the file and read the table.

Your Original Stays As Sent

Conversions are saved as new files, so the Parquet file you received is never changed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Parquet files.

What is a Parquet file?

A Parquet file (Apache Parquet) is a column-based data format used by data warehouses, analytics tools, and data lakes. It stores large tables compactly and reads them fast, which is why so many data exports arrive as .parquet, .parq, or .pq files.

How do I open a Parquet file?

Open it with Parquet Viewer from the Files app, iCloud Drive, Mail, AirDrop, or any share sheet. Every row and column appears in a table, with the schema and column statistics one tap away.

How do I open a Parquet file on a Mac?

Parquet Viewer runs on Mac as well as iPhone and iPad, so the same Parquet file viewer opens your files on every device. Download it from the App Store and open the file.

How do I convert Parquet to CSV?

Open the Parquet file and choose CSV. The whole file is written out as a CSV you can open in any spreadsheet, load into a database, or pass to a script.

How do I convert a CSV file to Parquet?

Open the CSV in Parquet Viewer and convert it to Parquet. The column types are worked out for you, and you can check the finished Parquet file in the viewer right away.

Can I convert Parquet to JSON, or JSON to Parquet?

Yes, both ways. Convert Parquet to JSON for web and API work, or convert JSON, JSON Lines, and nested JSON with objects and arrays to Parquet.

How do I open a Parquet file in Excel?

Convert Parquet to Excel in Parquet Viewer and you get a workbook that Excel opens directly, with the header row in place. It is the quickest way to read Parquet in Excel without an import wizard or an add-in.

Can I see the schema of a Parquet file?

Yes. Every column name and data type is listed, along with which columns can be empty.

What column statistics does it show?

Null counts, distinct values, the minimum and maximum, and the compression and encoding of every column.

Can I run SQL queries on a Parquet file?

Yes. Write SQL against your Parquet data and read the results as a table, with no database to set up.

Can I search inside a Parquet file?

Yes. Search every row of the file for any value, across all columns.

Do I need Python, Spark, or a command line to convert Parquet to CSV?

No. A Python script, a PySpark job, or parquet-tools on the command line is the usual way, and it means setting up an environment first. Parquet Viewer converts Parquet to CSV, and CSV to Parquet, with a tap.

Do I need AWS Glue or Azure Data Factory to convert CSV or JSON to Parquet?

Not for the files on your device. Cloud pipelines such as AWS Glue and Azure Data Factory are built for scheduled jobs on data already in the cloud. For a CSV or JSON file you have in hand, Parquet Viewer converts it to Parquet directly.

Should I use a Parquet viewer online instead?

An online Parquet viewer or online Parquet to CSV converter asks you to upload the file to someone else's server first. Parquet Viewer opens and converts it on your own device, so customer and company data never leaves it.

Where can I download an Apache Parquet viewer?

Parquet Viewer is on the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Download it and open your first file in seconds.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account and no login. Open a file and start reading.
